Pope backs U.S. March for Life (ANSA) - Vatican City, January 22 - Pope Francis on Wednesday backed the 41st annual March for Life in Washington commemorating the Supreme Court sentence legalising abortion.

"I join the March for Life in Washington with my prayers.

May God help us respect all forms of life, especially the most vulnerable," the pontiff said on his Twitter account, @pontifex, which has more than 11 million followers. Pro-life supporters held signs and yellow "life" balloons to raise public awareness on abortion in the United States and try to overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

Fourteen buses with more than 600 young people descended on Washington, joining thousands of others, including those from the Chicago area.

Cardinal Francis George joined the group and commended them for "telling the truth" and allowing the pro-life movement to "come in from the cold," and stand firm against abortion.
