Man in Rome commits suicide to avoid mafia-related arrest (see related) (ANSA) - Rome, January 22 - A man on Wednesday morning committed suicide to avoid arrest in a massive anti-Camorra mafia police sweep targeting 90 people in the regions of Lazio, Campania and Tuscany.

The 43-year-old businessman Giuseppe Cristarelli threw himself from his fourth floor residence in Rome to flee police arriving to put him in handcuffs, said investigators.

Police also seized 250 million euros of assets on Wednesday in the largest-ever round-up against the Contini clan of the Neapolitan Camorra Mafia, believed to be heavily involved in laundering illicit earnings via apparently normal businesses and other investments.
