Italian port equipped for Syrian arms transfer, govt says (see related) (ANSA) - Rome, January 17 - Italian Premier Enrico Letta on Friday sought to calm worries surrounding chemical weapons from Syria that will be transferred between ships in an Italian port before being destroyed in international waters. In a statement from his office, the premier said the port of Gioia Tauro in southern Italy was equipped for such operations, citing it had moved 3,048 containers bearing toxic substances weighing a total of 60,168 tons between 2012 and 2013. The premier added he was organizing a meeting with local and regional representatives in the area ahead of the United Nations-organized arms transfer, after local leaders expressed outrage over not being consulted before the government made its announcement on Thursday.
