Benedict XVI to celebrate brother's birthday in Vatican (ANSA) - Vatican City, January 14 - Monsignor Georg Ratzinger, brother of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, turns 90 on Wednesday and is to spend the day celebrating with his younger sibling at the Vatican.

The brothers are known to be close and were ordained to the priesthood together on 29 June 1951. Georg went on to become known for his direction of the cathedral choir in Regensburg, Germany.

Benedict XVI, 86, became the first pope to abdicate in 600 years in February last year, saying he no longer had the mental and physical strength to continue to lead the world's 1.2 billion Catholics.

Cardinals elected the Argentine Jorge Mario Bergoglio to replace him and Pope Francis - as he chose to be called - has already been credited with giving a new sense of scope and direction to the Catholic Church.
