Rome unveils plan for major urban redevelopment (ANSA) - Rome, January 10 - Rome is aiming to create a 'city of science' with a major urban redevelopment project including a museum, social housing, and shops in a former barracks, Mayor Ignazio Marino said Friday.

The project in Rome's Flaminio district near the Parco della Music auditorium and the Maxxi museum of modern art, will stretch over about 51,000 meters and include a science museum, about 200 private homes and 70 rent-controlled social housing units.

Space will also be provided for such public facilities as a library and a medical clinic.

The project will involve the city of Rome, the national economy ministry and other Italian agencies including a real estate fund managed by the publicly owned Cassa Depositi e Prestiti.

"By using an abandoned site of the State, we can do all of this that will give benefits to the State, the capital (city) and its citizens," said Marino.
