Pope Francis praises circus performers at general audience (see related) (ANSA) - Vatican City, January 8 - At the end of his first general audience of the year on Wednesday, Pope Francis devoted praise and attention to a group of circus performers in the crowd. A group of 120 circus performers were among the 9,000 or so worshippers who came to see the pope in St Peter's square. The performers were in Rome for the international circus festival Rome-Capital-Golden Circus. Some of the circus performers, including a pair of trampolinists, gave a brief show for Francis at the end of the general audience. The pontiff smiled and applauded as did Vatican Prefect Monsignor Georg Gaenswein, seated beside him.

"These people were great. Congratulations.

Congratulations," the pope said afterward.

The pope also mentioned that Italy's best-known circus, the Golden Circus of Liana Orfei, is scheduled to tour in Latin America this year.

"I invite them, as they travel from city to city, to feel like messengers of joy and brotherhood in a society that needs these things so much," Francis said.
