Pope Francis gives first general audience of 2014 (ANSA) - Vatican City, January 8 - A group of 120 circus performers on Wednesday attended the pope's first general audience of 2014, as did pro-soccer players of Genoa club Sampdoria. The circus performers are in Rome for the international circus festival, Rome-Capital-Golden Circus. Roughly 9,000 people braved frigid temperatures in St Peter's Square as Pope Francis - in a winter coat and scarf - made his customary 20-minute tour in an uncovered white jeep greeting participants in the crowd, reported the Vatican prefect.

When the pope left the jeep, he shook the hands of Genoa Archbishop and Italian Bishops' Conference (CEI) President Angelo Bagnasco and Sampdoria club members.
