Four arrested for 'bribes' in post-quake L'Aquila contracts (ANSA) - L'Aquila, January 8 - The deputy mayor of L'Aquila was among eight people put under investigation Tuesday for alleged bribery in the rebuilding contracts of the central Italian city following a devastating earthquake in 2009 that killed over 300 people and left about 65,000 more homeless.

Deputy Mayor Roberto Riga and seven others allegedly took part in falsifying contracts of over one million euros and received bribes totalling 500,000 euros. Four of the eight investigated were put under house arrest.

"I feel awful. I feel betrayed," said Mayor Massimo Cialente, who has not been implicated. "I've always urged the utmost transparency and respect for the law".
