L'Aquila deputy mayor resigns over bribery probe (see previous) (ANSA) - L'Aquila, January 8 - The deputy mayor of L'Aquila announced his resignation Wednesday after turning up among eight people investigated for alleged bribery in the rebuilding contracts of the central Italian city following a devastating 2009 earthquake that killed over 300 people and left thousands more homeless. "I'm stepping down as deputy mayor and councilor in order to let the city administration, the mayor and the council work in peace, without any doubt cast on their work," said Roberto Riga.
