Youth who peed on Florence cathedral charged with obscenity (ANSA) - Florence, January 7 - Police on Tuesday charged a 22-year-old with public obscenity for urinating on the steps of the Florence cathedral on New Year's Eve.

The young man was photographed while committing the act on the Renaissance marble paving of the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was completed in 1436 with a dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi.

The picture landed on the front page of a local newspaper, and he was subsequently identified via Facebook, police said.

The culprit reportedly told police he was sorry, that he did not mean to offend the church or the city of Florence, and that he erred ''while in the grip of the fumes of alcohol''.
