Italian Navy rescues 823 migrants off Lampedusa (ANSA) - Lampedusa, January 3 - The Italian Navy on Friday rescued 823 North African migrants from four rickety boats in the Sicilian Channel south of Lamedusa, the stepping-stone island closer to Libya than Sicily.

The nationality of the asylum-seekers, who included 23 women and 46 minors, was not immediately known. Lampedusa is the site of repeated migrant landings and sometimes disasters. In two separate incidents last October, roughly 400 migrants died off its coast when their boats capsized, prompting Italy to launch a major search-and-rescue operation called Mare Nostrum and secure more help from the European Union.
