Half a million Italians had flu over holidays (ANSA) - Rome, January 2 - About half a million Italians, of whom 100,000 were children, spent the holidays in bed recovering from influenza, according to medical reports Friday.

The number of those suffering from the winter virus is expected to rise further in the days following the January 6 Epiphany holiday.

The most common strain of this winter's flu was determined to be the AH3N2, which was included in this year's vaccine. The paediatricians from Rome Children's Hospital Bambin Gesu' have suggested guidelines of hygiene, rest and a diet that is rich in fruit and vegetables.
