Italian Navy rescues 233 migrants off Lampedusa (ANSA) - Lampedusa, January 2 - A small boat carrying 233 migrants off the coast of a Sicilian island has been rescued by the Italian navy. The passengers came from Eritrea, Nigeria, Somalia, Pakistan, Zambia and Mali, authorities said. They are currently being transported from off the island of Lampedusa to Sicily, with arrival expected late Thursday. Closer to North Africa than mainland Italy, Lampedusa is the site of repeated migrant landings and sometimes disasters. In two separate incidents last October, roughly 400 migrants died off its coast when their boats capsized.
