'Strong changes' needed in politics says president

Napolitano urges institutional reforms in year-end address (see previous) (ANSA) - Rome, December 31 - Italian President Giorgio Napolitano in his year-end address on Tuesday called for "strong changes" in politics and the country's institutions. The president has long called for institutional reforms, including a new electoral law after the former law was struck down by the Constitutional Court earlier this month.

The current law, known as the 'porcellum' or 'pigsty' law, is largely blamed for leading to inconclusive elections in February, followed by two months of political gridlock and the unprecedented formation of a left-right coalition government in April.
