Nursing home seized for locking patients in cold attic (ANSA) - Rome, December 30 - Police have arrested five health workers and seized a nursing home in southern Italy after finding six elderly and mentally disabled patients locked in an unheated attic. During an inspection late Sunday, police found the men and women between the ages of 45 and 85 in what they described as a state of suffering, without any care from attendants at a nursing home in Castel Volturno, outside Naples. The room was dangerously cold with no heating, and dividers between patients were either broken or nonexistent, police said, who described the victims as "prisoners more than patients". Another 20 patients were said to be held in "precarious" conditions elsewhere in the nursing home. Patients spend an average of 700 euros per month for treatment there. They are currently awaiting medical exams and transfer to another facility.
