Avalanche alert in Italian Alps following ninth death (ANSA) - Turin, December 30 - The Italian Alps were on high alert for avalanche risks Monday following the latest of nine deaths in recent days. On Sunday, a 15-year-old boy from Turin was killed beneath an avalanche as he skied off course, becoming the ninth to die beneath the heavy snow in the area in just four days. A 25-year-old skiing with the teen has been charged with manslaughter.

Meanwhile the Civil Protection Agency issued a flood alert for central and southern Italy. Heavy rains are expected Monday in the central Lazio region around Rome, the southern Calabria region and Sicily.
