Seven out of 10 Italian families own their homes (ANSA) - Rome, December 23 - Slightly more than 72% of Italian families own the houses they live in, national statistical agency Istat said Monday.

Some 18% of families, meanwhile, live in rented housing, the agency added in its latest population report.

It also found a portion of the population lives in shoddy housing including shacks, cellars, trailers or garages, with the problem increasingly higher further south in Italy.

Between 2001 and 2011 families living in substandard housing increased by 13.8%, Istat said.
