Man dies after St Peter's self-immolation last week (ANSA) - Rome, December 23 - A 51-year-old man who set himself alight in St Peter's Square on Thursday died of his injuries on Sunday.

The man, a cleaner at the nearby Santo Spirito hospital, reportedly suffered from health and family problems.

At around 8:30 local time on Thursday the man covered himself in gasoline from a bottle and set himself alight.

The first person to come to his aid was a Jesuit priest, who threw his frock and jacket on top of him.

Soon two police officers arrived and put out the flames with a fire extinguisher.

But the man died after sustaining third-degree burns to 50% of his body. The case recalled another 15 years ago when Alfredo Ormando, a gay man, set himself ablaze in St Peter's Square to protest the Church's stance on homosexuality.

He died days later too.
