Letta vows prison reform (ANSA) - Rome, December 23 - Italian Premier Enrico Letta vowed to reform Italy's overcrowded jails in his end-of-year press conference Monday. Letta noted that a third of inmates were awaiting verdicts, an "abnormal situation".

Italian prisons are more than 15% over capacity and overcrowding is a factor in rising suicide rates.

President Giorgio Napolitano has repeatedly called for amnesties to help improve conditions.
