Italian families shrink to average of 2.4 people (ANSA) - Rome, December 23 - Italian families are shrinking in size, Istat said in a report Monday.

The average family has dropped from an average of 3.3 people in 1971 to 2.4 people in 2011, according to the latest data released by the national statistics institute.

Families that are composed of only one person in 2011 made up about one in three of the total and are on the rise due to an ageing Italian population and the demographic and social changes that are afoot in the eurozone's third-largest economy.
