Shamed by footage of refugees and migrants stripped, hosed down

Management fired at Lampedusa immigration center (see related) (ANSA) - Palermo, December 18 - The Sicily chapter of the Legacoop federation of cooperatives on Wednesday ordered the consortium running a controversial migrant reception center on Lampedusa island to fire current management and reorganize itself.

The moves come as the European Commission and Italy both opened probes into the treatment of migrants at the center after RAI public TV on Monday night broadcast footage shot with a cell phone by a Syrian refugee, showing dozens of men and women forced to strip outdoors in public in the winter weather before guards hosed them down with disinfectants.

The Lampedusa center is run by a consortium called Lampedusa Accoglienza (Lampedusa Welcome) which belongs to the Gruppo Sisifo Group, which in turn holds various Legacoop companies.

The State reportedly pays Lampedusa Accoglienza 21,000 euros a day to care for the more than 700 people currently being detained in the center.

Legacoop is a federation of cooperatives in various economic and cultural sectors.

The social utility of cooperatives as based on mutuality and non-profit goals is recognized under Article 45 of the Italian Constitution, which calls for the government to promote their development.
