Chailly hopes to woo back Muti to La Scala (ANSA) - Milan, December 16 - Riccardo Chailly, helmsman-in-waiting at Milan's La Scala, said Monday he hoped to woo back conductor Riccardo Muti to the world-famous opera house for a production. At a press conference, Chailly said that among his goals as principal conductor starting in 2015 and musical director as of 2017 is to bring back maestros "who have made (La Scala) great in the past 50 years, chief among them Claudio Abbado, (as well as) Riccardo Muti, who gave a lot to this theater, also Daniel Barenboim". Barenboim succeeded Muti in 2011 after a six-year vacancy created when Muti stormed out over artistic differences. Today Muti directs Rome's Teatro dell'Opera and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. At the press conference Monday, Chailly was joined by Milan Mayor Giuliano Pisapia and future La Scala superintendent Alexander Pereira. Pereira said he spoke Sunday with one former La Scala conductor "whose name starts with an M". "I would be very happy to do a co-production. It makes sense, right?" he added. (photo: Riccardo Muti)
