Soccer: Italian Super Cup likely to return to China

Curtain-raiser in Beijing unless one of teams

Soccer: Italian Super Cup likely to return to China (ANSA) - Milan, December 13 - The traditional curtain-raiser to the Italian soccer season, the Super Cup between the Serie A champions and the Italian Cup winners, will probably return to China next season, Serie A said Friday.

The match was played at Bejing's 'birdnest' National Stadium in 2009, 2011 and 2012.

It was meant to be played in Beijing this year too, but champions Juventus vetoed the venue, despite complaints from Cup-winners Lazio about lost revenue, and the match was moved to Rome. Juve won the match at Rome's Stadio Olimpico, Lazio's home ground, 4-0 in August.

Serie A chief Maurizio Beretta explained Friday that the Super Cup will be played in Beijing on August 23 unless one of the teams set to take part is engaged in a playoff to qualify for the Champions League. If this is the case, the Super Cup will be in Rome on August 24. The Serie A season is set to start the following weekend and finish on the weekend of May 31 2015.
