'La Grande Bellezza' nominated for Golden Globe
Sorrentino's film in category for Best Foreign Language Film12 December, 15:42
Paolo Sorrentino's film, compared by some to the work of the great Federico Fellini, has been nominated as Best Foreign Language Film in the awards to be announced next month.
The Golden Globes honour the year's best film and television productions, and are often seen as a pointer for the Academy Awards, announced several weeks later. The 71st annual Golden Globe Awards will be held on January 12, 2014 and hosted by comediennes Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
'La Grande Bellezza' will also be Italy's contender in the upcoming selection of the five nominees for the Academy Award for best foreign language film.
The movie about a culture critic immersed in the squalid world of Roman high society beat six other films to be Italy's candidate for the Oscars.
Sorrentino will know whether his picture has made the final Oscar ballot on January 16, when five nominees from around the world will be announced.
The 86th Academy Awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2014.
'La Grande Bellezza', which was chosen as Italy's Oscar contender by a commission at the Italian national cinema industry association's (ANICA) headquarters, was nominated for the Golden Palm at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
Italy has not won an Academy Award since Roberto Benigni's 'La Vita e' Bella' (Life Is Beautiful) 15 years ago.
