60% of Italians dream of vacationing abroad (ANSA) - Rome, December 10 - More than 60% of Web-searching Italians dreamt of spending this year's Christmas holiday abroad, but just 5.3% actually purchased tickets, the online travel agency revealed on Tuesday.

Tripsta's study was based on an analysis of website-user searches for flights departing from Italy between December 20 and January 3.

The most clicked-on destinations in Europe were London and Paris. Outside of Europe, Italians preferred New York, Bangkok, Miami and Dubai.

One search in seven on flights for London yielded a purchase. Just one search in 20 on flights to New York resulted in a ticket.

Italians tended to buy fewer, but more expensive plane tickets than French and Germans, however.

This Christmas holiday, 78% fewer Italian customers than German ones will board a plane. Yet Italians spent an average of 451 euros per ticket compared to the German average of 336 euros and the French average of 362 euros. Tripsta found Rome leads destinations for Italian clients this Christmas with 29% of tickets, followed by Milan with 23% and the Sicilian city of Catania with 10%. Tripsta's findings appear to confirm a report by Italian business association Confesercenti-Swg that revealed Italian families were reducing their 2013 holiday-travel budgets by 22% compared to 2012.
