Sorrentino's 'Great Beauty' wins big at European Film Awards (ANSA) - Berlin, December 9 - Italian director Paolo Sorrentino took home four European Film Awards over the weekend in Berlin for his film The Great Beauty. The Neapolitan filmmaker garnered prizes for best film, director, actor for Toni Servillo, and editor for Cristiano Travaglioli. Sorrentino told ANSA that he hadn't been expecting to win the awards, "just like I hadn't been expecting the box office success of The Great Beauty, with its seven million in takings for a film like mine that isn't a comedy. The film also did well in cinemas in the Netherlands, France and Germany". Sorrentino attributes its success to the "universal language" the film employs, but said that it might simply be due to the fact that it is a "courageous film". "Talking about today is difficult, like it's difficult to discuss the sense of being lost and the efforts to live that make up us all," he said. The Great Beauty is Italy's official submission to the Academy Awards in the foreign language category.
