Pope to beatify missionary killed in Burma
Vatican says nun from northern Italy to be honoured09 December, 13:53
Mario Vergara, a priest of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions, and lay catechist Isidore Ngei Ko Lat, were killed on May 24, 1950 in Shadaw in Burma, which the country's authorities now call Myanmar. Both were martyrs to the Catholic faith, the Vatican said. During a private audience with Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Pope Francis also announced the beatification of Giovannina Franchi, the 19th century founder of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Nurses who cared for smallpox victims.
