Young Moroccan engineer made Italian citizen (ANSA) - Turin, December 6 - A Moroccan man who sold tissues and lighters to pay his way through college was made an Italian citizen Friday in accordance with a presidential decree. "This is a dream," said Rachid Khadiri, 26, who graduated in October with a degree in engineering. The Moroccan national became a cause célèbre after Italian media profiled his struggle to pay for classes at Turin's Polytechnic. Even the Northern League, which takes a hardline stance on immigration, praised him for hard work and integration. "I'm happy for myself and all the people who helped me over the years," added Khadiri, who graduated in October. Turin Mayor Piero Fassino said he was an example for the city's 150,000 foreigners. "We want those who live here to feel Italian," he said. "We want Turin to be evermore multiethnic and multireligious".
