(ANSA) - Naples, December 6 - Statuettes of Nelson Mandela were displayed in the shops of two master artisans of nativity scenes in Naples on Friday in homage of the South African leader and Nobel-laureate who died Thursday at the age of 95.

Naples has a centuries-old tradition of finely crafted miniatures for elaborate nativity scenes clustered in shops on the downtown street of Via San Gregorio Armeno.

Marco Ferrigno placed Mandela among a cluster of celebrity statuettes, including famed Italian scientist Rita Levi Montalcini, opera divo Luciano Pavarotti, American pop singer Elvis Presley and Pope Francis. ''I depicted him with the smile that has always characterized him,'' Ferrigno said Another artisan, Genny Di Virgilio, placed Mandela among traditional Neapolitan nativity scene figures.
