Man electrocuted while trying to steal copper

(ANSA) - Naples, December 6 - Police were attempting Friday to identify a man whose charred body was found in an abandoned factory north of Naples.

They suspect the man was electrocuted while attempting to steal copper from the electrical system of a plant near Limatola, located about 35 km north of Naples.

The body was discovered after power service to the plant was disrupted.

As Italy's worst recession in more than 20 years continues to bite, copper theft continues to rise. Government data released last month showed that Italy's train service, as well as its electrical grid, have been suffering at the hands of copper thieves.

The data showed that 11,000 separate instances of copper theft were reported in the first six months of this year in Italy, up 12% from the same period in 2012.

Some 2,000 of those thefts were on Italian rail lines, while 5,000 were on property belonging to utility provider Enel.
