Prato official among 11 arrests05 December, 12:24
(ANSA) - Prato, December 5 - A public official was among 11 people detained Thursday for alleged ties to fraudulent immigration practices in and around Prato, where a blaze at a Chinese-owned garment factory killed seven people over the weekend. Police said the suspects were both Italian and Chinese nationals. The unnamed public official, who is said to work at the local municipality, is suspected of taking money in exchange for registering Chinese immigrants who entered the country illegally. Police said at least 300 Chinese people they knew of paid bribes between 600 and 1,500 euros. The alleged network made up to 450,000 euros in eight months, police said.
