Lawyer who challenged Italian election law now focused on EU

Changes to European election law demanded on linguistic grounds

Lawyer who challenged Italian election law now focused on EU (ANSA) - Milan, December 5 - One of the lawyers who successfully challenged Italy's election rules said Thursday that he is now turning his sights on European electoral law.

Carlo Felice Besostri said that he and a group of colleagues filed notice earlier this week of a challenge to European law on grounds including its divergence with Italian law on linguistic minorities.

Besostri was part of a group that saw success on Wednesday, when Italy's Constitutional Court ruled that Italy's Porcellum or 'pig-sty' electoral law was unconstitutional.

That decision, based on the lawyers' challenge, now increases pressure on Italy's parliament to change rules that were widely seen as leading to uncertain election results.
