Weakness for Balkan food betrays fugitive

Borek hankering leads outlaw to cops

Weakness for Balkan food betrays fugitive (ANSA) - Milan, December 4 - A Bulgarian outlaw has been tracked down in northern Italy thanks to his weakness for Borek, a savory puff pastry common in the Balkans, police said Wednesday.

Teodor Iliev Nikolov, wanted for several robberies in his homeland, was tracked down after police staked out the only Balkan eatery in Vigevano, the town outside Milan where he'd been keeping a low profile. Police said the 29-year-old was spotted frequenting a non-profit organization devoted to troubled youth for his alcoholism, which earned him the nickname 'Slivova', a Balkan plum brandy.
