'Threatened to throw baby overboard'

Three arrested in migrant boat emergency (updates previous) (ANSA) - Crotone, December 3 - Police said Tuesday they had arrested three suspects accused of organizing the voyage that left 142 migrants adrift off the southeast coast of Italy for over 36 hours Sunday and Monday.

In addition to facing human-trafficking charges, police said witnesses accused the men of threatening to throw a three-year-old girl overboard when she vomited from sea-sickness. The men, identified as the captain and two handlers, are also accused of beating the passengers. The coast guard on Monday rescued all passengers aboard the ship after an Egyptian passenger used a satellite phone to alert authorities. Rescuers could not intervene sooner due to extreme weather conditions.
