Police in Rome, Milan, Naples to carry pepper spray (ANSA) - Rome, December 3 - Police in Rome, Milan and Naples will begin carrying pepper spray in January, sources told ANSA Tuesday. The spray, used to immobilize people by causing severe eye irritation, can reach up to three meters away. Sources say the pepper spray is being used in a test phase.

If successful it could be distributed beyond Italy's three biggest cities. Authorities have long mulled introducing pepper spray to the police arsenal but concerns regarding safety have prevented them thus far.

Civilian use of pepper spray has been legal in Italy since 2011. (photo: police in Davos spray protesters with pepper spray)
