The state alleges that the Arena family from the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta mafia in 2008 delivered 1,350 votes to Girasole, a self-styled anti-mafia crusader who was formerly from the center-left Democratic Party and later joined the centrist and liberal Civic Choice party founded by ex-premier Mario Monti.

Girasole's husband allegedly negotiated the deal with brothers Massimo and Pasquale Arena in exchange for allowing the clan to keep productive farmland that had been confiscated from their father, boss Nicola Arena.
