Netanyahu presents pope with history of Inquisition (ANSA) - Vatican City, December 2 - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented Pope Francis with book about the Inquisition written by his historian father when the two men met Monday morning in the Vatican.

During their 25-minute meeting, which included an interpreter, Netanyahu's wife Sara, and a small entourage, the Israeli leader presented the pope with the book on the Spanish Inquisition. Inside, Netanyahu inscribed: "To His Holiness Pope Francis, the great guardian of our common heritage," sources said.

He also presented the pope with a silver Menorah, the candle-holder used in the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, while Francis responded with the gift of a bronze plague depicting St.

Paul.

The pope, who is planning a visit to Israel and Jordan next year, discussed peace in the region with Netanyahu, who arrived in Rome on Sunday for a two-day visit.

The Vatican has not confirmed the dates of the pope's visit to the Holy Land but Israelis sources last week said the visit would occur in May.
