Pope to name his first cardinals in February
Vatican says consistory planned after Council of Cardinals meet31 October, 16:44
His first consistory since becoming Pope in March has been scheduled for February 22, the feast of the Chair of St. Peter, said spokesman Father Federico Lombardi.
The Vatican did not name the bishops who will become cardinals, but said that advance notice of the consistory is being given to "facilitate the planning of other meetings" involving cardinals. The eight-member Council of Cardinals, a group of prelates established by Francis to advise him on Church reforms, is scheduled to meet just before the consistory.
Before the consistory, the pope also plans to meet with the College of Cardinals to discuss reforms to the Curia.
The feast on February 22 honours the Chair of St. Peter, a relic kept in St. Peter's Basilica and believed to have been the throne he used.
