Italian inflation drops to 0.7%, lowest since 2009

The national statistics agency said the inflation rate was down from 0.9% in September.
The fall is surprising as the top band of value added tax (VAT) increased from 21% to 22% at the start of October. Istat added that the trolley of most-frequently bought goods by consumers dived to 0.7% in October - compared to 1% in September and 1.7% in August - the lowest level since October 2009.
