Close to 3.2 million Italians unemployed
Up 25,000 on August, 391,000 more than in Sept 201231 October, 11:11
The agency said that 22.349 million people in Italy were in work last month, 80,000 (0.4%) down on August, and 490,000 (2.1%) lower than in September 2012, according to provisional data not adjusted for seasonal variations.
It said the proportion of Italians of working age who were in employment last month dropped to the level of 13 years ago in September, 55.4%, down from 55.6% in August and from 56.6% in the same month in 2012. Istat added that 654,000 under-25s were unemployed in September, down 10,000 (1.5%) on August, but up 34,000 (5.4%) on 12 months previous, according to provisional data not adjusted for seasonal variations. Despite the fall in the number of young unemployed with respect to August, the proportion of the overall working population in the 15-24 age group who were unemployed rose, because fewer were classified as actively looking for work.
Istat said 964,000 people in the 15-24 age group were in work last month, down 23,000 (2.3%) on August and 138,000 (12.5%) on September 2012.
The number of 'inactive' young people, who do not have jobs and are not actively looking for work, stood at 4.371 million, 64,000 (1.2%) higher than August and 54,000 (1.25).
