Public health professor develops tool to encourage improved care30 October, 17:47
The fruit of two years of development, the website doveecomemicuro.it (where-and-how-to-treat-myself.it) offers a guide that helps one find the best possible structure in Italy for treatment of specific symptoms and ailments, based on geographic location - distance from home - and 50 quality indicators for the health problem in question.
The indicators come from data collected from the Italian health ministry, regional health services (Agenas) and other research entities. The data analysis for the research engine is guaranteed by a supervisory committee consisting of major international experts on transparency.
The project was developed by Professor Walter Ricciardi, director of public health department at Università Cattolica - Policlinico Gemelli of Rome.
Ricciardi hopes it will drive improvement among healthcare facilities in Italy.
''Scientific evidence shows that publicly reporting the performance of a certain structure encourages activities aimed at improving the quality of the services offered at the individual hospital level''.
