"We talked about D'Alessandro, Syria, Geneva 2 (planned talks on Syria) and the November 26 Italian-Russian summit in Trieste", Bonino said. D'Alessandro, 32, a biotechnologist from Naples, was arrested on September 18 along with 29 fellow activists during an attempt to climb a Gazprom oil platform to protest against imminent drilling in the Arctic Sea.
A Murmansk court rejected an appeal for his release on bail on October 15. Government leaders, NGOs and human rights advocates from around the world have appealed with Russia for the activists' release. Piracy charges were recently downgraded to hooliganism.
