Police bust 18 for string of mafia killings
Accused of four murders, six attempted murders14 October, 15:55
Most of the arrests took place mainly in the area of the Puglian city of Brindisi on the heel of Italy's boot-shaped peninsula.
Carabinieri police and State police collaborated in an investigation launched in 2012, which sought to reconstruct the movements and misdeeds of the Frangia clans in the Brindisi zone, pinpointing the vendettas and reprisals behind four murders and six attempted murders from 1997 to 2010. Among the accused were Francesco Campana, believed a high-ranking boss, and his alleged right-hand man, Ronzino De Nitto, both of whom were previously arrested between 2011 and 2012 after a period as fugitives.
Investigators said at a press conference in Brindisi on Monday that their efforts were assisted by an informer, Ercole Penna.
