Renzi 3% ahead of Letta, poll
Italians split over end of Berlusconi era11 October, 12:26
Renzi, expected to be voted PD leader in December, was on 50% in the poll for RAI TV, with Letta on 47%.
Centre-right People of Freedom (PdL) party leader Berlusconi polled 19% and the head of the mutiny that forced his embarrassing climbdown, formerly ultra-loyal PdL secretary Angelino Alfano, was on 30%.
Italian President Giorgio Napolitano got 53% while the government's approval rating rose from 29% to 31% after the confidence vote that stymied Berlusconi's bid to sink the right-left executive over the PD's insistence on implementing the three-time premier and media magnate's upcoming ouster from the Senate after a tax-fraud conviction.
Asked if the first-ever PdL rebellion against its charismatic leader marked the end of the 20-year Berlusconi era, 53% said Yes and 46% No.
