Cycling: Twitter followers 'save' Santambrogio from suicide
Rider fell into depression after positive doping test11 October, 16:31
Santambrogio posted "Goodbye World" on his Twitter account, @maurosanta84, late on Thursday and said he "cannot take it any more".
The shock announcement provoked a wave of concern, support and affection on the social-media website and the rider said Friday that he had had a rethink.
"I thank you all for helping me to reflect and for having saved me," he tweeted. "I didn't sleep, I reflected on everything. I was in danger of making a blunder that's bigger than me and I think I wouldn't have solved anything.
"It would have just caused so much suffering to those who are near me and love me". Santambrogio, who won the 14th stage of the 2013 Giro, was sacked by his Vini Fantini Selle Italia team after the positive drugs test. Former Giro champion Danilo Di Luca rode for the same team before being fired after it was announced he had tested positive for EPO with just two days left to run at the Giro.
