Anti-mafia investigators in the Sicilian capital Palermo ordered the confiscation, which included olive-oil companies, shops, homes, land, and numerous bank accounts, mainly located in Trapani and the northern Italian cities of Varese and Milan.
Matteo Messina Denaro, also called 'Diabolik' after a popular Italian comic book anti-hero, is thought have become one of the new top bosses of the Cosa Nostra mafia after the April 2006 arrest of Bernardo Provenzano.
Denaro has been on the run since 1993, and has been ranked by Forbes Magazine as one of the world's ten most wanted men.
