Letta, Barroso heckled in Lampedusa
'Shame,' shout protesters at premier, Commission president09 October, 10:39
The EU has promised to provide Italy with greater help in dealing with the thousands of migrants who attempt the hazardous crossing from North Africa every year on rickety boats, many of which set a course for the small island of Lampedusa.
As many as 363 people are feared to have died in last week's disaster - 289 bodies have been recovered so far.
Tension on Lampedusa is high after migrants held at an overcrowded reception centre on the island protested at their conditions on Tuesday, as more boats continue to arrive.
"Shame. Shame," shouted protestors at Lampedusa airport after the arrival of Barroso, Letta and other officials.
"Go to the reception centre. Go and see how these people live. Killers". After arriving at the airport, Barroso and Letta went to pay their respects at a hanger holding the coffins of victims.
