Pope Francis calls first synod, on the family
'Extraordinary' meeting only third ever08 October, 17:44
It is only the third time since the synod's creation in 1965 that such an assembly will be held.
The October 5-19, 2014 synod on The Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelisation is expected to address the problem of divorcees remarrying, among many other issues.
The Vatican this week criticised the German diocese of Freiburg for taking steps to allow divorcees to take communion, which is normally forbidden.
Francis, who has struck a more moderate tone than his predecessors Benedict XVI and John Paul II, has called for more debate on the Church's relationship with the modern family.
