Cancellieri promises 'real' prison reform
Concerns about prisons are "very serious" says justice minister08 October, 18:59
"We are working on a real prison reform," said Annamaria Cancellieri, after Napolitano issued a strongly worded call for a government response to longstanding concerns over prison overcrowding.
"There is widespread support for the message (from) President Napolitano, who touched on very, very serious (concerns) that need to be answered," she said. Napolitano warned earlier in the day that Italy continues to suffer from a "mortifying inability to guarantee the basic rights," of prisoners.
And he reminded the government that it has been ordered to implement reforms within the next eight months by the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
The country's prison conditions have long been a source of criticism from human rights' groups.
