Pope tells nuns to smile from within
Francis does not want flight-attendant smiles04 October, 17:59
''I am so disappointed when I encounter nuns who are joyless, who may smile with the smile of a flight attendant but not with the smile of joy that comes from within'', the pontiff told nuns at the Santa Chiara cloistered convent.
Friday's meeting with the nuns was also attended by eight cardinals that sit on a Vatican reform council.
The life of the cloister is not one of isolation, but one that becomes ''vastly human'' in its relationship with Christ, the pope continued. ''Cloistered nuns are called to a greater humanity'', said Francis, adding he meant this ''without getting into ideas that are too abstract, which merely bother one's head''.
''You must be like mothers'', Francis told the nuns. ''You must forgive and bear with one another, because communal life is not easy, and the devil takes every opportunity to divide us.
''Love one other, for the monastery must not be a purgatory but rather a family. There are and will be problems and they will be solved as in a family: with love,'' the pontiff concluded.
